This Week in Science, still my favourite science podcast, has released a compilation CD of science themed music! Some of the tracks (”Lost in Space”, “Robots are Great”, and “First Assumptions Were Correct”) are downloadable from their site, and for $5 you can order a hard copy of the mix CD.
update – Marshall of TWIS left the following in a comment:
“these are all songs performed by our listeners and donated for our use. Most of the bands are from N.California and are all unsigned acts, so if you liked something on the CD make sure to let the band know.”
There is also a long list of science themed songs in the comments of this post on Pharyngula.
And don’t forget my old, old post that I link to so often I should probably put it somewhere on the sidebar: Musical Scientists. Not so many suggestions for songs per se, but it name drops a bunch of musicians/scientists. (Although after I wrote it I heard that the singer for…. one of the well-known recent “punk”/rock bands also has one or more science degrees. I forgot which band, but I remember being surprised.)

I’ve started listening to this podcast too. I like it. But popsci is still my favourite
I’m going to check out the CD though. Boyd’s birthday is next week and it might go nicely with his ‘Sci Fi Themes’ album.
Doctor Steel is a mad scientist planning to take over the world. His album is pretty cool. (And he performs in a vinyl lab coat. Doesn’t seem very practical, but I guess it’s probably very easy to clean!) http://www.doctorsteel.com/
How can they NOT have “She Blinded Me With Science”?!
They probably couldn’t get permission for that one.
Yep – these are all songs performed by our listeners and donated for our use. Most of the bands are from N.California and are all unsigned acts, so if you liked something on the CD make sure to let the band know.
And thanks for giving us a mention, Eva. We appreciate it!

I decided that buying this for Boyd is that presents for myself for other people thing I try to avoid, so I bought him something else.
Which of course means I need to buy this for myself but I bought three CDs already today.
Pfft! Permission. Small detail!
Pfffttt…lawyers!
Just bullies in suits – I’ll kick ‘em in the shins.

You’re probably talking about either Greg Graffin, from Bad Religion (and briefly a department-mate of mine, as I arrived and he was leaving), who has a PhD in paleontology or the singer from The Offspring, who I believe has a molecular biology PhD.
It was the Offspring singer I was thinking of, thanks!!
