Creature Cast

Creature Cast is a podcast from the similarly-named website, hosted by the Dunn lab at Brown University. They have two episodes so far, both really creative:

Episode 1:

CreatureCast Episode 1 from Casey Dunn on Vimeo.

Episode 2:

CreatureCast Episode 2 from Casey Dunn on Vimeo.

I want to be in a lab that makes videos with play-doh!

You can subscribe to the podcast on iTunes.

LabLit podcast

I interviewed Jim and Star about Subtle Technologies for the latest LabLit podcast. Give it a listen! (Pardon the cicadas – there was construction going on indoors, so this was the quieter option.)

Mr Science

podcastBy completely random internet-clicking coincidence I recently came upon the Mr Science podcast. Mr Science is 27-year old Marc West, from Sydney, and he describes the podcast as follows: “You don’t have to be boring to be into science – and you don’t need to be wacky and zany either. We look at science in a social context, and always try to be entertaining and relevant.”

mrscience.jpgTopics that have been discussed on the episodes I listened to: beer, speed dating, and music — all things people like to talk about anyway, only here they get a subtle science angle. (In that respect it reminded me a little bit of Inkling)
I like the fact that most episodes are conversations between people. Listening to the beer episodes, for example, was just like having beers with some guys in a pub (instead of walking to the subway in freezing weather, as I was doing), and the fact that conversations were about science weren’t even that obvious.

Visit the site, give it a listen!

60 second science

I have almost no patience for talk radio, but I can manage Scientific American’s 60 second science. It’s only a minute — that’s shorter than a song, so you definitely have time to listen to it. Every episode of this podcast is like those short little light science blurbs in the newspaper, and takes about as long to listen to as reading it yourself.

Back to School!

Berkeley’s webcast/podcast schedule for the fall 2006 semester is up and full of information! The semester has only just started, so this is the time to catch up. There are webcasts and podcasts available for physics, biology, chemistry, engineering, and many other courses.

Mice on Drugs!

Mouse Party is a web feature from the University of Utah’s Genetic Science Learning Centre. (Previously featured on easternblot with their interactive agarose gel.)
In Mouse Party you pick a mouse that’s using a certain drug and receive a quick explanation on how that drug works. It’s very basic and clear and it looks adorable:

pot smoking mouse is picked up on a chair

four slides explain how THC affects your brain.

Elsewhere on the Learning Center website I found a podcast about medical marijuana, and here is their main portal to the “Science of Addiction” feature of which Mouse Party is a subsection.

Studio 360 Science & Creativity archives

Studio 360 is a radio show about arts and culture, produced by Public Radio International and WNYC. The show is available as RealPlayer files on their site. One of the archives is “Science and Creativity“, which contains shows about the relation between science and art! I’m listening to episode #726 right now, about the biology behind creativity.
